Northern Suburbs Youth Hub

The Northern Territory Government is delivering a new Northern Suburbs Youth Hub at Leanyer Recreation Park.

Following consultation in 2025, Leanyer Recreation Park was confirmed as the location for the new purpose-built facility. The site sits within an active recreational precinct with access to public transport and existing amenities used by young people and families across Darwin’s northern suburbs.

The Youth Hub will provide a safe, structured and welcoming space for young people aged 10-17. It will support young people to:

• connect with peers in a safe environment
• learn practical life skills
• take part in positive recreational activities
• access to trusted support services close to home.

The Youth Hub forms part of the government’s focus on prevention and early intervention – creating safe spaces that encourage connection, skill-building and positive pathways.

Leanyer Recreation Park

Leanyer Recreation Park was confirmed as the preferred site following community consultation in 2025.

Community feedback supported locating the Youth Hub within an established recreational precinct that:

• is well known and already used by young people
• has strong public transport access
• is close to facilities such as swimming, basketball and skate areas
• integrates naturally into an active community environment.

The building has been designed to complement surrounding activities while maintaining appropriate privacy and separation.

Design of the Youth Hub

The Youth Hub has been designed as a modern, flexible and functional space that supports both structured programs and informal connection.

The facility will include:

• a large, flexible air-conditioned activity space
• breakout and meeting rooms
• a learning kitchen for cooking and life-skills programs
• accessible amenities
• dedicated staff and support areas
• outdoor activity spaces
• safe drop-off and parking arrangements.

The design prioritises safety, supervision and accessibility while creating a welcoming environment for young people and the broader community.

Services and programs

The Youth Hub will provide a safe and inclusive environment for young people between the ages of 10 to 17 to come together, socialise, and access necessary support services.

The programs and activities offered will be both engaging and focused on developing important life skills under the guidance of trusted adult mentors.

Various youth program providers and support services, including those related to health and wellness, and job and skill development will have the opportunity to conduct their programs at the Youth Hub.

Organisations that have the experience and expertise working with young people will be invited to submit proposals through an open grant process.

The operating hours of the Youth Hub will align with school times, opening after school finishes.

As part of the service delivery model, the Youth Hub will offer safe transportation home in the evenings.
