Community gathers to honour service animals on Purple Poppy Day
Veterans, families and community members gathered at Reg Hillier House over the weekend to mark Purple Poppy Day and honour the animals who served and continue to serve alongside Australian Defence Force personnel.
The event was held in partnership with the 1st Brigade of the Australian Army and recognised the courage, loyalty and contribution of animals involved in military operations.
Attendees watched Explosive Detection Dogs demonstrate their precision and discipline, met a welfare dog providing comfort and connection to veterans, explored a Bushmaster vehicle, and learned more about the history of animals in service.
Veterans also shared their stories and reflected on the important role animals have played in supporting defence personnel both during service and in recovery.
The Northern Territory first formally recognised Purple Poppy Day in 2025. This year’s event continued that tradition, bringing the community together to remember the animals who stood beside those who serve.
