New grants to support safety and inclusion of older Territorians
Two new grant programs have been released to strengthen awareness and prevention of older persons abuse, and to support the safety, wellbeing and inclusion of older Territorians.
The initiatives are designed to strengthen community awareness and prevention of older persons abuse, an issue that is often hidden and underreported. With the Territory’s senior population expected to grow significantly over the next decade, the grants focus on early intervention, education and culturally appropriate support.
The Older Persons' Abuse Grant Program
The Older Persons’ Abuse Grant Program is now open, offering funding between $3,000 and $15,000 for community-based projects that help prevent abuse of older Territorians. A total of $50,000 is available in 2025–26. Funding may support activities such as community education sessions, professional training for frontline workers, culturally safe awareness campaigns, or events that provide safe spaces for older people and families to seek information and support.
Applications close 31 May 2026.
The World Abuse Awareness Day Grant
The World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Grant, provides a single $20,000 grant to support Territory-wide events and activities held around World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on 15 June 2026. The grant encourages organisations to deliver awareness-raising initiatives across multiple locations, with a focus on accessibility, inclusion and alignment with the NT Seniors Policy.
Applications close 6 March 2026.
Older persons abuse affects an estimated 15% of Territorians, with financial abuse, verbal abuse and neglect among the most common forms. These new grants will help strengthen community understanding and create safer, more supportive environments for older people.
