Celebrating International Women’s Day across the Northern Territory

Published

Hundreds of Territorians gathered in Darwin on Saturday 8 March to take part in the annual International Women’s Day walk and celebration. Despite the heat, participants were kept cool thanks to umbrellas and fans provided by our Office of Gender Equity and Diversity (OGED).

Held in collaboration with the United Nations Association of Australia NT Branch, City of Darwin, and OGED, the event continues to be a vibrant demonstration of community spirit, unity and recognition of women’s leadership and contribution across all sectors.

This flagship event was one of many featured in our International Women’s Day Calendar of Events, showcasing a wide range of activities across the Territory that honoured and celebrated the achievements of women and girls.

In Alice Springs, the Women’s Museum of Australia hosted an IWD Breakfast focused on women’s integration into military roles, featuring veteran stories, policy discussions and a Q&A on gender equality in defence. In Katherine, Wurli Wurlinjang Aboriginal Corporation presented an art and photography exhibition highlighting the lives and contributions of local women.

Additional events included:

  • Financial independence workshops facilitated by the Casuarina Lions Club
  • A Community Celebration Garden Party hosted by STEPS AMEP
  • Digital empowerment and literacy workshops delivered by Smart Health Global

These activities represent just a selection of the many initiatives held across the Northern Territory, demonstrating the depth of engagement and community collaboration in support of gender equity.

The theme for International Women’s Day 2025, March Forward, commemorates 30 years since the United Nations’ Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a global commitment to achieving gender equality and empowering women everywhere.

Thank you to all staff, partners and community groups who contributed to making this year’s program a success.
