1994 Cabinet Records released
Every year on the first day of January the 30-year-old Cabinet records are released, giving a glimpse into the inner workings of the Northern Territory Government, from major policy announcements to national milestones.
Back in 1994 tourism was a focus of the Territory Government. It was the year the Northern Territory Tourism Development Masterplan was endorsed and the tourism campaign ‘You’ll never never know, if you never never go’ fronted by TV personality Daryl Somers put the Territory on the tourist destination map.
Cabinet also endorsed a discussion paper on Aboriginal Cultural Tourism and a strategy to improve domestic and international air routes to and within the Territory to help bolster tourism.
Other Cabinet highlights of the year were:
- funding approval for the development of the Desert Wildlife Park and Botanic Gardens Alice Springs
- the release of ‘Bushfire Management in the Northern Territory’ document
- amendments to the Evidence Act to protect vulnerable witnesses giving evidence in court
- the release of the NT Women in Sport and Recreation Draft Policy
- approval of the Aboriginal Employment and Career Development Strategy for the NT Public Sector.
Key highlights of 1994
- Deckchair Cinema opened.
- Window on the Wetlands Visitor Centre opened.
- The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, screened at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival.
- The Cyclone Tracy exhibit opened at MAGNT.
- Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as South Africa’s first black President.
- 'Love is all around' by Wet Wet Wet was the highest selling Australian single.
- Jeff Bezos founded the Amazon online bookshop.
